This is such a contrary statement to what our flesh desires. We are born into a world, and a country even, telling us constantly to move ourselves forward. To better ourselves and our situation and that is the best thing we can do.
Jesus, however, tells true way we get ahead is to serve other people. This may be the hardest thing for us to grasp, but one of the most beneficial when we do. It reminds me of our study on Sunday mornings through the book of Acts, and chapter 2 that says:
42They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
And it amazes me to think how different our world would be, if like our predecessors in the early church, we gave ourselves up for the good of others. How many of our lots friends/relatives/co-workers would give their lives to Jesus if we put others needs above our own?
Who can you serve today? How can you lay your own desires down for the desires of those around you?
